Two surgeons at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital in the southern city of Guangzhou were diagnosed with cancer in June and October this year, the hospital said Wednesday. Both had previously worked in the hospital’s highly regarded breast-cancer research laboratory.

HONG KONG—Elizabeth Tang flew home to visit her husband in Stanley Prison, where he is awaiting trial on national security charges. As the 65-year-old labor activist left the Hong Kong maximum security facility earlier this month, a team of police was waiting—along with journalists from a state-owned newspaper. Ms. Tang’s arrest on March 9 for alleged collusion with foreign forces sent a signal to the financial hub’s 7.3 million people and their Communist Party rulers in Beijing: There would likely be no letup in the campaign to root out dissent.
TAIPEI—Honduras has established diplomatic relations with China and formally cut ties with Taiwan, following through on a pledge this month to shift its official recognition to Beijing. With the loss of Honduras, Taiwan now has 13 diplomatic partners, most of them small states in Central America and the Pacific, with the Vatican its only official partner in Europe.

Ford, GM Engage in China Price War as Car Sales Slump
  + stars: | 2023-03-17 | by ( Selina Cheng | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Ford has cut about $6,000 off its Mustang Mach-E until the end of April, according to online sales promotions. HONG KONG—Auto makers and dealerships in China are slashing prices after the lifting of pandemic controls failed to reverse slumping demand in the world’s largest car market. Companies including Ford Motor Co., BMW Group and Volkswagen AG are offering deep discounts and promotions on electric vehicles after China phased out its nationwide subsidies for EVs. Others including General Motors Co. and the maker of Citroën are slashing prices on their gas-powered cars.
HONG KONG—China’s passenger car retail sales shrank almost 20% in the first two months of this year, underscoring the challenges facing manufacturers in the world’s largest but long-stuttering auto market. The nation’s auto makers sold 2.7 million passenger cars in January and February combined, according to the China Passenger Car Association, down from 3.3 million a year earlier. The association partly attributed the drop to the ending of tax cuts on autos that boosted sales during the pandemic, as well as the end of electric-vehicle subsidies.
HONG KONG—China’s electric-vehicle makers, buoyed by their success in eclipsing foreign rivals at home, are increasingly venturing abroad as the country’s car exports surge. Led by the Warren Buffett-backed auto giant BYD Co., Chinese EV makers have launched a dozen own-branded models across at least 16 countries over the past two years, including in most major economies in Northern and Western Europe.

Masks will no longer be required whether indoors, outdoors or on public transport in Hong Kong. HONG KONG—After almost three years, Hong Kong said it will scrap its mask mandate starting March 1, removing one of the longest-running pandemic restrictions worldwide as the city tries to rebuild its image as an international financial center. The city’s Chief Executive John Lee announced the move Tuesday, lifting a ban that had been criticized by some health experts for requiring people to wear masks in public places at all times, except during exercise and in country parks, even as most other Covid-19 restrictions had been gradually dismantled in recent months.
People looked at a Ford Mustang Mach-E at an auto show in Shanghai in 2021. HONG KONG— Ford Motor Co. promoted Sam Wu to head its China business as the American auto maker struggles to reverse its dwindling market share in the world’s biggest car market. Mr. Wu, who joined Ford China as managing director from Whirlpool Corp. in October, takes over as president and chief executive on March 1, the Michigan-based auto maker said in a statement Thursday. In his new role, Mr. Wu will report to Ford CEO Jim Farley and replaces Anning Chen, who is due to retire in October.
